There are about 250,000 eccrine sweat glands in each foot, more per square cm than any other part of the body. Under normal conditions, both feet can generate up to 500ml of sweat a day. Why do feet sweat so much? It's because they are designed that way.

The Science of Foot Sweating: Why Feet Sweat More Than Anywhere Else

Sweat glands in human body are of two types:Ā 

  • Eccrine glands are present on the surface of the whole body and produce clear, watery sweat to regulate temperature.Ā 

  • Apocrine glands are located in the hair follicles and produce an oily, protein-rich fluid (not on the soles of the feet) in armpits, the groin area, and other places.

The palms and soles have the highest concentration of eccrine glands (up to 700/cm²) throughout the body. This is not random. It is because of evolutionary adaptation. Moist palms and soles make it easier to climb up and use tools. 

Normally, our feet produce 500ml/day of sweat. When exercising, during heat stress, or under stress: > 1 litre (from the feet only). The addition of closed shoes with no egress for that moisture causes moisture to build up inside. Production of sweat continues with gradual increase.

  1. Plantar Hyperhidrosis | Overactive Sweat Glands Explained

Plantar hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating of the foot that is caused by overactive eccrine sweat glands that receive abnormally intense signals from the sympathetic nervous system. The glands make more sweat than is needed to thermoregulate.

The International Hyperhidrosis Society estimates that around 5% of the world's population suffers from hyperhidrosis, which often starts before 25 years of age. Primary (focal) hyperhidrosis is not known to be caused by any specific condition and is commonly inherited. There are underlying factors that contribute to secondary hyperhidrosis, such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, Parkinson's disease or certain medications.

  1. Stress, Anxiety and Emotional Sweating in the Feet

Stress and anxiety energise the sympathetic nervous system. The eccrine glands on palms and soles are particularly sensitive to emotional stress, rather than physical heat. This is in addition to thermoregulatory sweating.

The body's set-point temperature in the hypothalamus is directly affected by the changes in oestrogen and progesterone. When these hormones change (menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause) the thermostat starts to sweat at lower temperatures.

Increased blood volume, elevated metabolic rate and hormonal changes during pregnancy cause much greater sweating, particularly in the feet and hands.Ā

How to Stop Feet Sweating: 8 Proven Methods That Actually Work

  1. Wash feet daily with antibacterial soap especially between toes and dry thoroughly. The bacteria and fungus usually take up residence between the toes.

Yes, because eccrine sweat glands on the soles are stimulated by emotional factors, as well as by heat, and are thus constantly active. The body produces about 500ml of sweat a day at rest. If your plantar sweats through your socks in just minutes, particularly in colder climates, then there is a possibility you may have plantar hyperhidrosis, which you should discuss with a podiatrist.
