What Is Camphor? Origin, Chemistry and How It Works on Skin

The Camphor Laurel Cinnamomum camphora (Linn.) J.Presl. is a tree of East Asia (China, Japan, Taiwan), which can grow up to 30 meters tall and can survive for centuries. The INCI name used in cosmetics is simply Camphor.

It is a waxy, white or clear solid at room temperature with a powerful aromatic odour. Very volatile and absorbs quickly through the skin when touched. Camphor is naturally extracted through steam-distillation of its wood, bark and leaves. Only the most refined fraction of camphor, which is white (the most refined), is used in therapeutic products.

Understanding how it works on skin is based on receptor chemistry. Camphor is an agonist for both warm and cold receptors, the TRPV1 and TRPM8 receptors. In simple words, it plays a trick on your nervous system so it feels both cold and hot and turns off pain signals. Here is the counter-irritant effect that everyone is familiar with, the warming then cooling effect.

The rubefacient action is the next. Camphor dilates superficial capillaries and increases the blood flow in the area, which causes the skin to warm up. The metabolic activity increases in the tissues below it.

In 2025, PMC conducted a study on C. camphora borneol chemotype, which found that it has antibacterial properties against S. aureus, E. coli, and other pathogenic bacteria. The mechanism is that the terpene compounds present in camphor like eucalyptol and limonene. They interfere with the bacterial cell membrane and inhibit the activity of bacterial enzymes.

Can You Apply Camphor Oil Directly to Feet Without Diluting It First?

No. Camphor oil is often found with over 50% camphor, far exceeding the EU safe limit for topical use of only 11%. Undiluted camphor is toxic and may irritate the skin or cause systemic effects if absorbed through skin defects. Is Camphor Effective for Treating Toenail Fungus at Home?

The main cause of toenail fungus, Trichophyton species, has been shown to be susceptible to the antifungal effects of camphor.
